Viet Cuong Concerto Premiere // National Sawdust // The Roof at Output

Happy Memorial Day!

Today we head to Troy, NY (after we perform at Music Haul in Union Square) Come on by!

The next few weeks are going to be quite exciting as we premiere a new concerto by Viet Cuong with the Albany Symphony, give two performances at National Sawdust, and perform a show with The Scumfrog and Jeffrey Zeigler at Output Club. Here’s the rundown!

This week we head to Troy, NY to perform on the Albany Symphony’s American Music Festival at EMPAC. First up on June 2nd we will premiere a new concerto by Viet Cuong entitled Re(new)al with the Albany Symphony’s new music ensemble, The Dogs of Desire. This piece was commissioned by General Electric (GE), and each of its three movements deals with one of their renewable energy initiatives – hydro, wind, and solar. Viet captures these elements in music with his beautiful timbral changes, extremely fast rhythmic hockets, and rich orchestration. Viet states in his program note, “Re(new)al is my simple way of celebrating everyone who is working together to create a cleaner, more efficient future for us all.” It’s a privilege for us to share the renewable energy efforts of GE while simultaneously making a valuable contribution to the percussion quartet repertoire. Get you tickets and find out more HERE!

The next day, June 3rd at 3pm, we will perform a recital at EMPAC featuring works by all American composers. Joining us on this program will be Elspeth Davis for a performance of Christopher Cerrone’s Goldbeater’s Skin. Also on the program will be Andy Akiho’s Pillar IV, David Crowell’s Music for Percussion Quartet and Steve Reich’s Drumming: Part 1. Tickets and more info HERE.

We then race back to New York City for a performance on June 4th of Robert Sirota’s mallet quartet, Spindrift at National Sawdust as part of the Bridging the Gap series curated by Mr. Sirota. Also featured on the program will be music by composers Angel Lam and Jonathan Bailey Holland.

On June 7th we head back to National Sawdust for the New York City premiere of two works –  Timo Andres’ Austerity Measures and Christopher Cerrone’s Goldbeater’s Skin. These pieces, while both extremely beautiful in their instrumentation, also both use very different sets of equipment. In order to make your intermission experience more fruitful than watching us move out of and into a 1 bedroom apartment in 15 minutes, Chris and Timo will be taking turns interviewing one another and talking about their music. Bonus points if you take notes and share with us after the performance!

Lastly on June 21st we head to Output in Brooklyn for a collaborative performance with The Scumfrog (Jesse Houk) and Jeffrey Zeigler. We’ll be presenting arrangements of works by Philip Glass and Jesse himself. Doors open at 5pm and our performance will be on the roof shortly after.

That’s all for June! Stay tuned this summer for more events and updates on our second annual NYU Sandbox Percussion Seminar.

Sincerely,

Ian, Jonny, Terry, Victor
